Walmart Gas Prices The Ultimate Guide 2024 |
let's scope out them gas prices at Walmart by seeing why the heck folks are lining up everywhere. We did a simple thing, picked five random Walmart locations representing different areas in the good ol' US of A. Then, we used GasBuddy to compare Walmart gas prices with nearby competing stations. The data is based on the price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline at the time of writing this.
You'll see Walmart's logos and low and high prices for competing fuel stations. In some cases, gas prices at Walmart might be the lowest. It's important to mention that Walmart sells gas in California only through Sam’s Club, which is part of it, so the state ain't part of our regional samples (but we'll cover Sam’s Club gas prices later).
So, after doin' our little survey, turns out Walmart's sellin' gas at competitive prices, but there's another way you can save even more if you're a Walmart+ member. This program that Walmart came up with is like their answer to Amazon Prime. It costs 98 bucks a year or 12.95 a month and gives you perks like free shipping and grocery delivery. Walmart says members get up to 10 cents off per gallon of gas.
Check out them examples above of gas prices in different areas, then add in the discount you're gettin' from Walmart+. Walmart's gas prices are among the best darn near everywhere. But is signin' up for Walmart+ makin' sense?

The answer is most likely yeah, especially if you're already shopping at Walmart for stuff other than gas, especially if you're buying online. But is it worth shelling out an extra 98 bucks a year just to save on gas? Let's crunch some numbers.
The 10-cent discount per gallon sounds good at first. But you gotta be drivin' a car that guzzles more gas than average to really benefit from that Walmart+ membership (assuming the other perks ain't worth it). And that's assuming fillin' up at Walmart is easy peasy.
But Walmart+ gives you discounts on gas at other places too. Members can get Sam’s Club fuel prices. There's a discount of the same value at Exxon and Mobil stations. And save anywhere from 5 to 10 cents per gallon at participating Murphy USA or Murphy Express gas stations.
So, to snag that Walmart+ discount on gas purchases, your membership's gotta be active and you gotta have the Walmart app on your phone. If you're buying gas from a Walmart or Sam’s Club location, you open up the app and scan the QR code on the pump screen. Sometimes, you might need to go through some extra payment steps if you don't have a payment method linked to your Walmart+ account. Then you go ahead and fill up your tank.
If you're using a Murphy station, you also need the Walmart app. You use it to get a discount code made up of six digits and punch it into the pump after selecting "Walmart+" on the pump.

Alright, so Walmart first dipped their toes into the fuel game back in 1996 by adding fuel stations at select Sam’s Club locations in collaboration with Murphy Oil, based outta Texas. Over time, that partnership grew to include stations bearing the Murphy USA label at many Walmart sites, leading to the establishment of a subsidiary company called Murphy USA. Murphy USA is an independent company headquartered in Arkansas. Murphy USA locations are basically kiosk operations near Walmart, while Murphy Express stores are coordinated fuel stations not directly affiliated with Walmart.
So, Walmart don't dish out details on the types of gas they sell, but they get their supply from Murphy. So, let's peep what Murphy's got:
E-10 Gasoline: It's got 90% unleaded gasoline and 10% ethanol. The ethanol comes from corn and other domestic grains, which cuts down on foreign oil use. There are different grades of this gasoline—regular, mid-grade, and premium.
Other Gasoline Blends: At some Walmart locations, you might find E-15 gas (with 15% ethanol). And at other stations, they sell a FlexFuel blend with up to 83% ethanol, but you gotta use this gas in vehicles specifically designed for FlexFuel. There's also an E-0 option at some Walmart stations; it contains 1% or less ethanol and works for lawn equipment and recreational vehicles.
ULSD Diesel: Walmart stations sell Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), which is clean-burning fuel.
Other Diesel Options: In some locations, Murphy's dabbles in Bio-Diesel, so you might find this fuel at selected Walmart spots. There's also winter-grade diesel fuel sold at selected Walmart locations during the cold months.
